Over 200 tomato farmers from central-southern Chile gathered this Thursday at the Agrozzi plant, Carozzi’s agro-industrial arm, for the annual event marking the beginning of the 2024-2025 tomato season. The activity took place in Teno, with local authorities and experts in sustainable agriculture in attendance.
The event featured the participation of Teno’s mayor, Sandra Améstica, alongside Naoto Shinozaki, an agronomist from Kagome Company, who shared insights on innovative drip irrigation systems using artificial intelligence. Francisca Vega from Campo Limpio addressed the latest regulations, including the REP Law and the management system for agro-industrial packaging. She also trained attendees on recycling plastic containers for fertilizers and similar products, contributing to a circular economy in agriculture.
During the event, the company recognized 18 farmers for their commitment, experience, and outstanding production performance in tomato cultivation. Among them, special awards were given to those exemplifying the Carozzi Spirit, highlighting their dedication and collaborative efforts, which have strengthened shared growth over generations.
“This is an opportunity to connect with our strategic partners and share best practices in sustainable agriculture, addressing critical issues such as climate change and water scarcity. It also allows us to review the previous season and apply those lessons to the upcoming one. Today, we focused on precisely that, offering unique training sessions on technology, innovation, and efficient resource use,” emphasized Juan Luis Ibarra, Agro-Industrial Division Manager at Agrozzi.
“We hope these gatherings continue for years to come; they are very important for all our neighbors who are grateful to the company. We are fortunate to have companies like Agrozzi in our community, providing jobs that enable us to educate our children. Thanks to this company, we have great professionals in our area,” commented Teno’s mayor, Sandra Améstica.
“We are grateful and proud to be recognized by the Agrozzi family for the years we’ve been with them. I’ve been here since the 1990s, followed by my sons, and now my daughter joined this year. There’s a human warmth in this company; everyone is friendly, and we usually don’t encounter any difficulties,” said Sergio Martínez and his family, recipients of the Carozzi Spirit award.
Carozzi collaborates with over 3,000 farmers, covering more than 63,000 hectares of fruits, vegetables, grains, and cereals between Chile’s Coquimbo and La Araucanía regions. Through Agrozzi, the company processes over 800,000 tons of fruits and vegetables, exporting to more than 50 countries across five continents. Additionally, Carozzi contracts 34% of Chile’s annual tomato production, processing over 400,000 tons annually.
Under its “Crecer Juntos” program, Carozzi maintains a strategic partnership with its farmers, promoting contract farming and price discovery models. These approaches enhance transparency in the commercialization process and provide greater certainty when planning planting cycles.
For tomato cultivation, Carozzi supports farmers by implementing, training, and financing modern irrigation systems, which are 95% more efficient than traditional methods. Currently, nearly 90% of the 4,000 hectares of tomato fields are under advanced irrigation, increasing yields from an average of 65 to 95 tons per hectare. This improvement boosts the productivity and competitiveness of tomato farming.
The company is now advancing fertigation promotion and automation, incorporating new tools and technologies to position Chilean agriculture on a more competitive and sustainable global stage.
